Webcams in nursing homes may help prevent elder abuse

Over one million elderly adults reportedly live in nursing homes all across America but, unfortunately, many of them are not getting the care they deserve. Families often leave their loved ones in elder care living facilities, trusting that they will be treated with respect, only to later discover that their loved ones have been physically, emotionally or sexually assaulted by staff members.

As the number of elders in America increases, incidents involving nursing home neglect and abuse may become even more common. That is why a number of states are making changes to current legislation regarding care for elders. Some states have introduced statutes allowing relatives of elderly nursing home residents to set up webcams in resident rooms to ensure that they are being properly cared for.

However, there are privacy concerns regarding the webcams, as some residents are unable to legally consent to the cameras due to various disabilities that often come with old age. Also, the camera could capture very sensitive things, including private conversations with loved ones, bathing and changing clothes. There is also an issue for the caregivers, who may not feel comfortable doing their jobs if they know they are being so closely monitored.

'Granny' cams may be a step in the right direction, but nursing home facilities also need to make more of an effort to ensure that their residents are properly cared for by the caregivers on staff. If an elder has been the victim of abuse or neglect in a nursing home, the facility may be held liable for the negligent actions of their employees. An attorney in the Beachwood area can help you file a claim against the negligent nursing home responsible for the mistreatment of your loved one.
