The basics about nursing home neglect

It is always a difficult decision for a family to choose to put their elderly loved one into a nursing home. Unfortunately, as humans age, our bodies and mind will usually break down. If there are no family members available to care for an elderly or ill loved one, it may become necessary that they are sent to a nursing home for 24-hour care.

Whether you are from the Beachwood, Ohio, area, or throughout the country, there are situations where patients at a nursing home facility do become victims of nursing home neglect and abuse. It might be physical abuse, or it could be more subtle abuses like not feeding a patient regularly, not addressing personal hygiene such as baths and changes of clothes and linens or even mental abuse or sexual abuse.

Abuse and neglect may be difficult to recognize, especially if an elderly loved one is unable to properly communicate the problem with family or friends. But, there are a few warning signs that could be linked to abuse. This includes the general behavior of the potential victim, including hostility towards their caregivers or noticeable changes in personality.

Injuries are a more obvious sign of abuse. This could include sprains, broken bones or even bruises on the body. If a victim is not properly fed, they may also experience malnourishment. This could be detected by weight loss or dehydration. Hygiene issues could be noticed by foul smells, bed sores or soiled bedding or clothes.

There are many things that need to be done immediately if you suspect that a loved one has been the victim of nursing home neglect and abuse. Reporting the issue and assuring the health and well-being of your loved one should always be the primary concern. But, if you suspect a nursing home is guilty, you may also want to consider filing a legal claim. No one should suffer from neglect or abuse, and those who are guilty of these acts should pay compensation to the victim, regardless of their age or condition.
