A look at boating accidents in Ohio

Whether you are out on the Ohio River, Lake Erie or one of the other dozens of lakes, rivers and ponds in Ohio, it is important to recognize that being out on the water can be dangerous. Each year, on average, more than a dozen people are killed on the water in Ohio.

According to statistics by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Ohio State Parks & Watercraft website, the types of fatalities and locations of the accidents vary widely. Between 2015 and 2016, 20 people were killed on ponds and lakes, including Lake Erie, while four were killed on rivers.

The types of fatalities vary greatly as well. They include falling overboard or capsizing, a flood, collision, a person leaving a vessel and a waterskiing accident. In the majority of cases, a life jacket was either not worn or not properly warn. This also explains why a majority of deaths are attributed to drowning, with only four deaths attributed to trauma resulting from a collision.

Statistically speaking, a dozen fatalities over the course of a year may not seem like that many. But, ask any family member of a victim, and they will tell you that any fatality is one too many. If your family has lost a loved one due to a fatal boating accident, you may want to consider filing a wrongful death lawsuit in an Ohio civil court. Your family may be entitled to compensation for damages, including medical expenses, pain and suffering and even future lost wages.
